Early Life and Career
Shaw was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1856. He was the son of a Protestant merchant and a Catholic mother. Shaw was raised in a strict Protestant household, but he later rejected his parents' religious beliefs. He attended Trinity College Dublin, but he did not graduate. After leaving Trinity College, Shaw worked as a clerk and a journalist. In 1876, he moved to London, where he began his career as a playwright.
Plays
Shaw's first play, Widowers' Houses, was produced in 1892. The play was a critical and commercial success, and it established Shaw as a major playwright. Shaw's other plays include Mrs. Warren's Profession (1893),Candida (1894),The Devil's Disciple (1897),Caesar and Cleopatra (1898),Man and Superman (1903),Major Barbara (1905),Pygmalion (1913),and Saint Joan (1923). Shaw's plays are often witty and satirical, and they explore social and political issues of the day. Shaw was a strong advocate for socialism and vegetarianism, and his plays often reflect these beliefs.
Criticism and Polemics
In addition to his plays, Shaw also wrote a number of works of criticism and polemics. Shaw was a strong critic of capitalism and imperialism, and he often used his writing to promote his socialist beliefs. Shaw's most famous work of criticism is The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Socialism and Capitalism (1928). Shaw also wrote a number of political pamphlets and essays, which were often published in newspapers and magazines.
Legacy
Shaw died in Ayot St. Lawrence, Hertfordshire, England, in 1950. He was 94 years old. Shaw is considered one of the most important playwrights of the 20th century. His plays are still performed around the world, and they continue to provoke and inspire audiences.
