1. The Princes in the Tower
One of the most infamous stories of royal fratricide occurred in England in the 15th century. Edward IV, the King of England, had two young sons, Edward V and Richard, Duke of York. After Edward IV's death in 1483, his brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester, became Lord Protector of the realm.
However, Richard's ambitions soon exceeded his role as protector. He accused the young princes of being illegitimate and had them declared ineligible for the throne. The princes were then imprisoned in the Tower of London, where they mysteriously disappeared. It is widely believed that Richard had them murdered, but the exact circumstances of their deaths remain a mystery.
2. The War of the Roses
The War of the Roses was a series of civil wars fought in England from 1455 to 1485. The conflict was primarily between two rival branches of the royal family, the House of Lancaster and the House of York.
One of the key figures in the War of the Roses was George, Duke of Clarence, the younger brother of King Edward IV. George was a complex and ambitious man, who often clashed with his brother. In 1478, George was accused of treason and executed on the orders of Edward IV.
3. The Assassination of Dmitry
In 16th century Russia, a young prince named Dmitry was the heir to the throne. However, his father, Ivan the Terrible, died when Dmitry was only a child. Dmitry's uncle, Boris Godunov, became regent and eventually crowned himself tsar.
Dmitry posed a threat to Boris's reign, and in 1591, he was assassinated at the age of 10. The circumstances surrounding his death are unclear, but many historians believe that Boris was responsible for the boy's murder.
4. The Fate of the Romanovs
One of the most tragic stories of royal fratricide occurred in Russia in the early 20th century. Nicholas II, the last Tsar of Russia, had五个 children, including four daughters and one son, Alexei.
In 1917, the Russian Revolution swept across the country, and the royal family was overthrown. Nicholas and his family were imprisoned and eventually executed by the Bolsheviks in 1918.
The stories of these royal brothers provide a glimpse into the dark side of history. They reveal the extent to which power and ambition can corrupt even the closest of relatives. These tragic events serve as a reminder that even in the most privileged of circumstances, human nature is capable of great evil.
