Symphony No. 41 in C Major, K. 551, commonly known as the "Jupiter" Symphony, is the last and most famous of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 41 symphonies. Composed in 1788, it is considered one of the greatest works of the Classical period and a masterpiece of orchestral writing.

Musical Structure

The symphony is structured in four movements:

  1. Allegro vivace: This opening movement is characterized by its energetic and joyful mood, with a main theme that is both memorable and technically demanding for the orchestra. It is in sonata form with a double exposition and a coda.
  2. Andante cantabile: The second movement is a lyrical and expressive adagio in F major. It features a beautiful melody that is played by the strings and then echoed by the woodwinds. This movement is in ternary form (ABA).
  3. Menuetto: Allegretto: The third movement is a lively minuet and trio in C major. The minuet is in ternary form (ABA),while the trio is in binary form (AA').
  4. Allegro molto: The finale is a majestic and triumphant movement in C major. It is in sonata form with a double exposition and a coda. The main theme is based on a chorale-like melody that is played by the brass. This movement is often considered to be one of the most powerful and exciting finales in all of classical music.

Instrumentation

The symphony is scored for a large orchestra, consisting of the following instruments:

  • 2 flutes
  • 2 oboes
  • 2 clarinets in B-flat
  • 2 bassoons
  • 2 horns in C
